The UO chapter of LiveMove sponsors a yearly speaker series to promote healthy and sustainable communities through increased transportation, livability, and advocacy. Their 2016 speaker series focused on advocacy and equity, and showcased a variety of speakers. The service grant was able to help promote family biking in the Eugene/Springfield community.
LiveMove collaborated with Safe Routes to School to bring Madi Carlson to speak about family cycling and explain the benefits to both parents and children. Madi, along with Shane MacRhodes of Safe Routes to School, discussed the barriers to cycling and how parents and families can overcome them. The following day families were able to participate in a bike decorating workshop, followed by a bike ride that ended with Prince Puckler’s ice cream and games. More than 70 adults and children participated in the bike decorating workshop and bike ride.
This two-day event created a space for families to better understand and utilize Eugene and Springfield’s bicycle infrastructure for the future, and encouraged healthy and safe transportation for all families.
