Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 2024
February 24, 2024: How Do We Address Social Issues?
At this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, we had 30 participants at two community partner project sites, practicing change-making through service. This event was filled with excitement after the first iteration was cancelled due to the intense and unprecedented January ice storm.
Excited to finally honor the legacy of Dr. King, the day began with morning snacks and an education session detailing how many issues need to be addressed both head-on and at the root sources. As an example, the issue of being unhoused in the local community was explored, looking at statistics that reveal the day-to-day issues and the root, systemic causes.
Our two teams worked with Food for Lane County’s Grassroots Garden and with Olive Plaza, which provides low-income housing for senior citizens. In total, participants served more than 60 hours of time!
